The boat was clean and delightfully decorated in expensive Italian style. This was offset by an array of hidden costs which made this cruise particularly expensive compared to similar cruises. My husband and I were attracted to the offer in the Daily Mail because of the seemingly low prices and fabulous Carribean itinery. Unfortunately potential customers were not made aware of the $11 a day per person tipping system until holiday was booked. The advert in the Mail suggested there would be a service charge added to the bill, but did not point out that this would add a substantial amount to your final bill. Also, I lost a piece of luggage on my way home which I dropped on the coach on the way to the airport, despite phone calls to Costa Cruises and faxes to Costa Customer Relations (they will not give a direct phone number - you have to email or fax) I have yet to receive a response. Unless Costa Cruises refrain from charging us, their customers, extortionate service charges I will choose other cruise line options in future. They also need to pay attention to post-customer service. I am not very happy.
Positives of Cruise
The itinery, the decor and the people we met
Negatives of Cruise
Our main point of contention was that the tipping system is far too expensive - it obviously covers low staff wages.
Also the trips to the islands were too short. We spoke to a lot of other passengers who felt the same as my husband and I. We felt that 1/2 day trips ashore were not satisfactory given the amount of money paid for this cruise. I became quite cynical and thought whilst passengers are on the ship they are spending money - whilst ashore they're not.........
